Design-Led Solutions Are the Way to Win New Deals

Coventry-based engineering firm DCM has secured a second contract from Whale Tankers, one of the largest manufacturers of waste tankers and jetting equipment in Europe. DCM already produces laser cut components for Whale Tankers. The addition of tailor-made fabrications further strengthens the established manufacturing relationship between the two businesses.

Nigel Stokes, managing director of DCM, is convinced that the contract with Whale provides a model for other UK manufacturers. He said:

"Although Whale is well known for the range of tankers and road cleaning vehicles it manufactures, all of their production is bespoke, which creates specific issues for suppliers like us.

No two parts are the same, which means we need to invest in the latest design and CAD/CAM technology to meet this demand.

"Bespoke manufacture is the name of the game, as standard batch production can now be achieved so much more cheaply overseas. To remain competitive, we need to deliver design-led solutions that overseas engineers cannot match. Our ongoing relationship with Whale is proof that British engineers can succeed, as long as they play to their strengths."
