Rapid Repairs Use Laser Beam Build Up Welding

Repair applications using laser-beam deposition welding, along with many other rapid processes, were presented in Leipzig earlier this month at EurouRapid, which was the 6th International user's conference and exhibition on rapid prototyping, rapid tooling and rapid manufacturing.

Steffen Nowotny, who heads the Thermal Coating Processes department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS, presented a paper on the use of this repair technique at the Euro-uRapid. He said: "It is six to seven times cheaper to repair a bladed disk using direct metal deposition. This repair method is gaining ground in the aviation industry, and in car manufacture it has already become a standard technique for restoring forming tools to working order."
