New Machine Extends Lead Further into High Precision Machining

Jefferson Engineering Services has added to its extensive 5-axis machining capabilities by investing in a Matsuura MAM72-25 5-axis high speed machining centre. The company provides high precision, complex machined components and subassemblies to the aerospace, defence, Formula one, medical and scientific industries. The new machine extends Jefferson's technological lead in the high precision 5-axis component machining sector still further.

The criteria used by Jefferson to justify this investment were all comfortably met by the Matsuura:

high speed, 'one-hit' 5-axis machining; high precision, accuracy and repeatability to 1 micron;

extended un-manned operation based on a multi-pallet and 240 tool ATC system; rapid response service support from Matsuura.

The Matsuura MAM72-25 features an impressive array of 5-axis high speed machining capabilities:

20,000rpm spindle for high speed machining, 50m/min rapids and scale feedback on all axes for precision accuracy and repeatability, and the Matsuura G-Tech 30i control system for simultaneous 5-axis machining demanding complex geometry and fine surface finishing.

In addition to its 5-axis machining technology, Jefferson invests heavily in CAD/CAM software to support its Design-for-Manufacture and Rapid Prototyping capabilities. Working directly from Catia V5 and ProEngineer solid models, Jefferson generates CAM and CMM programmes which can be simulated to test machining efficiency and accuracy. This capability has provided major benefits for Jefferson's customers tasked with converting from traditional casting machining to 'from solid' 5-axis machining.
