Wire EDM Specialist Buys In to 5-Axis 'Revolution'
01 Oct 2005
Medical and Formula One machinist Amdale, based in Portsmouth, has special skills as a wire EDM company. In January the company purchased a DMU 50 eVo universal CNC machining centre from DMG (UK) to boost the prismatic component side of its manufacturing business. Such has been the success of the machine that Amdale has just ordered a second machine, this time a new DMU 50 eVo linear, branded by DMG as representing a 'revolution' in five-axis machining.
Companies supplying components to the medical industry sector are under pressure, not only for shorter lead time deliveries but to reduce costs. Some customers are even adopting automotive strategies of annual cost-down reviews.
Amdale is one of the UK's leading contractors to the hip and knee replacement and special tool sector, and already owned a number of threeaxis machining centres that featured additional fourth axes.
Says Martin Koerner, commercial director of Amdale: 'Five-axis machining has made a phenomenal difference. We have cut cycle times by around 40% on jobs such as tooling for hip and knee replacement instruments, and medical industry gauges'.
