WML Engineering Ltd, Swansea, has recently invested in a comprehensive data management system from Prospec Systems Ltd, a fellow member of the BTMA (the trade association for precision turned parts and machined component manufacturers in the UK). The new system links the company's parts database to its management system and makes available, at the touch of a button, all works orders, drawings, material traceability reports, batch and first off analyses.
This investment builds upon WMLs Object Orientated Programming approach defined in the March issue of Engineering Capacity. Instant access to quotations in the production system enables WML to provide customers with the most cost effective production quantities. Details of base material prices spread over various batches can be given while on the phone.
WML provides up to the second management and manufacturing information by interfacing its management system with its Tornos Deco lathes. WML regularly reviews its entire component manufacturing process in its Business Process ReEngineering (BPR) strategy, which is aimed at giving customers the best possible service at the lowest possible price. Value Added Principles included in this strategy are structured to give cost down to the customer.
As a proactive member of the BTMA, WML has benefited from the interchange of thoughts and ideas. The organisation's technical presentations are important for today's machinists to remain aware of current and future technological trends in the market place. Previous meetings have included an IT presentation from DataTrack, and a group presentation from invited machine tool suppliers.
