Sustainability is More Than a Green Concept
01 Dec 2006
Though the green lobby is at the forefront of the political agenda at the moment, sustainability is not just for greenies! In fact, being sustainable isn’t only about the environment.
It is also about working in a way that will succeed now and into the future, both economically and socially, says Arthur Richardson, director, South West MAS.
Up until now we may have been tempted to focus on cost cutting and labour reduction, but as we move into the New Year, we need to think about business models and tactics that will create sustainable competitive advantage.
So, what can we do to achieve this? It is important to provide strong leadership, but of greater significance will be your ability to communicate effectively with your team and ensure that your business aspirations and ways of working are aligned to their own personal values and ambitions.
‘Shared vision’ is a term used by many management consultants. It makes the difference between those manufacturers who fail and those who succeed in the long-term. To build a strong future for your business, you need a team which is enrolled behind your aims and objectives, supporting them 100%.
Cultivating a culture where everyone feels able to contribute is a challenge but it is essential to sustainable success. A good starting point is to hold regular meetings, encourage two-way communication and more importantly to remember to praise and celebrate individual and team successes.
