Purpose Statements Build Stronger Identity
01 Feb 2006
Purpose statements are an ideal tool for communicating your products and services to others, and can help them to further understand your core business, aims and ethics in a concise manner, says Arthur Richardson, director of the South West MAS.
Defining a company's purpose statement, however, should not be the sole responsibility of the MD or board of directors.
Research has shown huge benefits to involving staff in its development, including increased staff motivation and empowerment, and clarification of goals. Effective leadership is necessary for this process in order to facilitate an open session for staff to agree on their purpose statement. This creative process is a valuable tool in itself, bringing together staff from all levels to define who they are collectively as a company, and agree on a statement that is representative of their values and beliefs within it.
The South West MAS team has collectively devised a new purpose statement: 'The trusted provider of advice and hands-on support for manufacturers aiming to achieve sustainable success.' This statement identifies what we and states our values and position to others within the manufacturing sector and the wider business community.
All companies, both large and small, should consider creating their own purpose statement. Its development can be an extremely valuable process for staff, and can provide your business with a stronger identity, both internally and externally, and outline your vision for the future.
