New Government Support Scheme Could Harm Export Performance

In a recent survey, members of the Sponsors Alliance were unanimous that the current Support for Exhibitors and Seminars Abroad / Trade Access Promotion scheme could have a negative impact on the UK's export performance.

SESA/TAP is spearheaded by UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), a branch of the DTI to provide SMEs with grants to attend overseas exhibitions and other events.

The 26 respondents of the Sponsors Alliance survey expect that barely onethird of the number of companies will take advantage of funding under UKTI's SESA/TAP scheme in 2006-07 compared to the number in 2005-06.

Most of these SMEs are seeking to expand then export business into new markets.

The Sponsors Alliance is a lobbying organisation representing Accredited Trade Organisations who organise participation in overseas events and missions under the SESA (now TAP) scheme. They are involved in export promotion and development for their sectors/members.
