The Largest Climate Change Experiment Ever Seeks Spare PC Power
01 Mar 2006
The world's largest ever climate experiment, developed for the BBC by climate scientists, is using a technique known as distributed computing to use the donated spare computer power on thousands of PCs around the world.
Billions of calculations per second are being performed to model the climate until 2080.
Led by Oxford University using the Met Office climate model, the experiment was launched in February on the BBC Four programme, Meltdown. Three weeks in, results are pouring back to Oxford from 137 countries, with more than 56,800 participating hosts (43,857 in the UK).
