Advanced Metallic Manufacturing Methods Are Needed for Speed

The area of advanced manufacturing methods for metallic components is changing rapidly with new ideas such as shaped metal deposition, laser deposition, high speed machining and Viper grinding. A forthcoming IMechE event on 10 May will address manufacturing issues and interests common to both motorsports and aerospace manufacturers and their supply chains.

The event, to be held at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, University of Sheffield, Rotherham, will feature a Renault Formula 1 demonstration car to illustrate the latest manufacturing innovations from design to build. Strongly supported by the Advanced Manufacturing Park, the seminar is a follow on from last year's highly successful 'Aerospace Metallic Manufacturing Methods'.

Information is beginning to be transferred from academic research and experimentation to production techniques. New materials are presenting new challenges to machinery and new approaches to maximize productivity are being developed. The dissemination of this combined knowledge will reduce the cost to industry at the same time increasing its competitiveness.
