Demand Grows for Friction Welding Services

Halesowen based Thompson, the friction welding specialist, has boosted its flourishing subcontract service with a £750,000 investment programme, which has included the installation of new machinery.

The new equipment means the facility now comprises a total of 12 machines, which have a variety of forging capabilities from 500kg to 150 tons. The subcontract service can friction weld a huge array of components from 4mm to 125mm diameter solid, either in small batches or large runs in excess of 100,000 off.

Thompson’s subcontract facility now boasts one of its latest friction welders which will further improve capacity following a three-fold increase in business. The single-ended Model 150 has been built by Thompson’s engineering team with a number of new, high-tech features such as CNC flash removal, closed loop control of welding pressures and unique, machine base construction. According to the company, these developments are specially designed to deliver improved levels of weld accuracy and finishing for a wider range of components.
