Free Guide Explains Types of 'Rusting' of Stainless Steel

Anopol, a stainless steel finishing company, has published an illustrated guide, available free, detailing how to protect the various grades from post-fabrication corrosion.

A common but erroneous belief is that stainless steel is inherently corrosion resistant whereas in reality any subsequent fabrication renders it as vulnerable as any other metal to corrosion if not properly treated.

Mild steel corrodes fairly evenly whereas with stainless steel corrosion is triggered more locally making it harder to detect and therefore more dangerous. The guide explains different types of ‘rusting’ – from pitting and stress cracking to galvanic and heat scale – together with the  processes available to improve performance and minimise risks: basic degreasing, mechanical cleaning, pickling and passivation. There is technical advice for in house operations setting out the essential tests and checks. A similar publication covering electropolishing is in preparation.

The company offers chemical and electrochemical surface treatment processes for stainless steel. Anopol has over 30 years experience in pickling, passivating and electropolishing of stainless steel and provides subcontract services at its two UK facilities or on-site when required.
