Locomotive Producer Secures Niche in Market
01 Oct 2006
In July, Clayton Equipment, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of locomotives for underground haulage, used all its engineering expertise to combine the move to a new home in Burton-upon-Trent with the successful delivery of four battery-powered locos to Metronet. The company’s relocation and investment in new equipment will provide a world class manufacturing environment.
Clayton pulled out all the stops on the Metronet contract, with the locomotives taking 2000 hours to develop and 4000 hours to build. The order was placed in October 2005 and every person at the company had to work extra hours to complete it ahead of schedule. Even the relocation from the firm’s old site in Hatton was delayed to make sure everything was sorted.
The purpose-built vehicles will remove over 3806 tonnes of waste as part of a major upgrade for the Waterloo and City Line on the London Underground, which will put Great Britain on track for the Olympics in 2012.
Clayton is the largest locomotive producer left in the UK and, thanks to its unrivalled design, quality and delivery adherence, has an enviable niche in the marketplace. “Improved efficiency, greater design capabilities and a more responsive approach to customer requirements will stand us in good stead for building on new contract wins with UK Coal, a Siberian Gas Tunnel and a goldmine in Ghana,” said Clayton’s finance and commercial director Bob Overton.
The company, which this year will record sales of £3m, and exports to over 60 countries across the globe, wanted to retain all of its 19 staff, whilst at the same time securing additional capacity to win new orders. It also has plans to adopt new workflow systems to improve performance across all areas of the organisation.
