  • Hone-All Precision moves on up

    Hone-All Precision Ltd is moving to a new factory in Cherrycourt Way, Leighton Buzzard, that, at 20,000 sq ft, is twice the size of its existing premises in nearby Dunstable.The move will be completed by the end of January 2008 and coincides with the purchase of two additional honing machines and the re-conditioning of the largest of the company’s three deep hole boring machines.

  • International emerging markets: Mexico

    Leading economists forecast that Mexico will overtake the UK economy by 2040! A startling prediction for a country that is rarely considered as a strong trading nation. In fact, Mexico is the largest trading nation in Latin America, with low inflation, a stable currency and is  now considered a low risk country.  With a population of 103 million and GDP of £221 billion in 2006, its income per capita is one-fifth that of workers in the USA, ranking it as particularly attractive compared with many other nations. Through its free market policies and membership of the OECD, NAFTA and FTA, Mexico has become the third largest recipient of foreign direct investment in the world. The UK has played a considerable part in this investment, with nearly £2.1 billion invested between 1999 and 2006. 

  • Raw material costs will constrain UK manufacturing

    The global competition for raw materials is predicted to have the greatest impact on UK manufacturers in the coming year, according to the annual Grant Thornton International Business Report on Manufacturing. 

  • DavyMarkham revitalizes 1956 forging press

    The newly-formed dedicated Reconditioning Service at Sheffield heavy engineering company, DavyMarkham, has overseen the refurbishment and technical upgrading of a Davy 6000 tonne forging press for Valdunes of Dunkerque, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of railway wheels and axles. 

  • Investment boosts flexibility at RE Thompson

    In a move to gear up for growth, aerospace specialist RE Thompson has re-evaluated every aspect of its business and invested in new capital equipment. In the first phase of reorganisation it has installed a Mori Seiki NH5000 40 DCG horizontal machining centre with a 12 pallet Fastems Flexible Pallet Magazine and a Zoller CNC tool presetting machine. A second Mori Seiki and Fastems combination will follow at the beginning of 2008, closely followed by a third and fourth.

    Tax specialist Alma Consulting Group is advising UK companies to act now and claim the R&D tax relief they are entitled to before time runs out. UK companies have just three months to prepare and submit their claims ahead of the 31st March 2008 deadline that entitles them to substantial tax savings for the last six years.

  • Sliding heads put new capacity on line at Metaltech

    Since 2001, subcontractor Metaltech Precision has machined a family of six 19 mm diameter parts from Swedish iron bar on one of its 20 fixed-head lathes for a customer in the railway industry. In 2006, production volumes suddenly doubled, causing director Steve Hill to reassess the job.
