Machining Set Up Takes Time Out of Production

At Oxford Engineering Ltd, Abingdon, the introduction of bespoke tool holders developed specifically for multi-task machining applications is proving a highly successful. Sandvik Coromant’s Capto modular tooling system combined with the multitasking machines are putting all of the theory into practice as senior CNC programmer Steve Garland explains: “Specialising in highly complex short run machining means we are constantly looking to take time out of the machining operations without compromise to quality.”

The multi-tasking tool holders have the capability to transmit high levels of torque. They have high spindle speed capabilities, high bending strength and offer exceptional repeatable accuracy with pre-measurement or setting off the machine.

Oxford Engineering operates seven multi-tasking machine tools at Abingdon, the most recent arrival being a 5-axis Vertical Integrex e1060V8 turning and milling centre. In December of last year the company also purchased three Mazak machine tools - Integrex 400 and 200 turning/milling centres and a Vertical Nexus 510 machining centre. These supplement two Daewoo Puma 400M and 400LM turning/mill centres, two Hitachi Seiki Hi-Cell turning/mill centres and further CNC turning and milling machines plus many other CNC machine tools.

Chris Budd explains: “We are very ambitious and the company achieves year-on-year growth of 15-20%, currently turning over £10m. To achieve our future aims and to offset the challenges from low cost manufacturing we acknowledged that we had the skills to compete technically but need to take time out of the manufacturing operations which is where the multi-tasking machines come in.

Oxford Engineering offers a wide ranging ‘total manufacturing service’ from lean manufacturing, supply chain management, high technology CNC machining and low-cost high volume manufacturing, covering end user industries ranging from aerospace to medical, oil and gas, semi conductor and instrument manufacturing.
