A 5m by 2m 350ºC high pressure autoclave will allow motorsport and aerospace companies to develop advanced, complex and high quality prototype and production composite components. The autoclave is the centrepiece of a new facilitynew centre, which has been opened by motorsport engineering specialist BERU f1systems.

Alcoa forging lightweight alloy wheels for Reventón supercar

Alcoa has been selected by Automobili Lamborghini to supply forged alloy wheels for its one million Euro Reventón car. With a limited production run, Lamborghini required the flexibility of Alcoa's manufacturing expertise to develop a lightweight wheel to complement the unique appearance and performance of the Reventón.

Based just half an hour’s drive from one of Europe’s largest oil and gas ports in Milford Haven Bartlett Engineering gets 75 percent of its turnover comes from the petrochemical sector. This means it machines a lot of difficult-to-machine nickel-based materials and stainless steel but also other ferrous alloys such as EN26W steel hardened to 350 Brinell.

Forgemasters rolls out Asian contracts

Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd (SFIL) is producing its largest plate-mill rolls for the Asian steel market in two deals worth more than £4.5m. The first four 170 tonne back-up rolls, produced for Siemens VAI, will be shipped to Chinese steel company Wuhan Iron and Steel Group Corporation in a deal worth almost £2.5m.

Supertube sets off for London

Deepdale Engineering Company Ltd has completed and despatched a 20m long, 2.2m diameter section of monopile tube for a Central London rail project. The 40mm thick carbon steel tube was cold rolled and automatic submerged arc welded at Deepdale’s engineering and fabrications unit in Dudley.

Independent steel trader Balli Steel reports that in the last 12 months global steel prices have increased by 100% and now range from around $1,000 to $1,500 per tonne. The company highlights that global annualised steel production has reached a record 1.4 billion tonnes, up from 800 million tonnes in 2000.

Engineering expands despite gloomy economy

Businesses in the engineering and technology sector are continuing to expand and recruit new staff despite the gloomy state of the economy, according to research by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The IET’s annual skills survey of 400 companies across the engineering and technology sector reveals that nearly two thirds cited business expansion as a reason for recruitment.
