Waterjet profiler piles on the pressure in Cornwall
13 Aug 2008
An 87k psi waterjet profiler has been installed at LaserMaster in Redruth, Cornwall. Believed to be among the most powerful systems in Europe it will cut almost any material, including steel and granite, up to half a metre thick.
Conservative shadow minister Mark Prisk uses the waterjet to cut the opening ribbon at LaserMaster
Using a tiny amount of garnet abrasive, and water travelling at three times the speed of sound, the waterjet can cut through a metre of 50mm thick stainless steel in less than nine minutes.
The company thinks that this new local capability will in turn lead to all kinds of possibilities in Cornish industries as diverse as engineering, architecture and even art and design.
LaserMaster general manager Craig Lincoln explains: “Hyper-pressure waterjet technology was developed to precision-cut ceramics and composites for the stealth fighter and space applications without causing mechanical stress or delamination.
“Locally, though, there are plenty of down-to-earth uses for the equipment. Because of the power, we can cut faster, deeper, and at higher quality than ever before – and we hope that ability will put Cornish designers and engineers at a real advantage.
“It’s incredibly versatile so we’re looking forward to seeing what applications our clients dream up!”
The new equipment was officially commissioned by Mark Prisk MP, Shadow Minister for Enterprise, who used the high-pressure jet to cut an opening ribbon.
