Individually adapted workholding for Edwards Vacuum
03 Dec 2008
West Yorkshire’s Craftsman Tools has completed a £65,000 order for seven individually modified triform work-holding platforms for Edwards Vacuum. The triforms will be mounted onto horizontal machining centres at the West Sussex-based vacuum pump specialist.
Craftsman has designed triforms so as to better use the tool clearances when the faces are set at an angle of 120 degree, as opposed to the usual 90 degrees of the more commonly found cubes.
Robert Johnson, Craftsman Tools managing director, said: “The seven triforms are part of our standard workholding range. We have then adapted the units individually for the client’s specific needs.
“Designing the cubes to operate at a 120 degree angle proved to be the best solution in allowing more working room.
“We can deliver cubes pre-drilled to suit existing fixturing, supply standard fixture plates or design and supply a complete fixturing package to client’s exact requirements.”
Standard sizes within the triform range vary from 250m to 630mm face width and suited for pallets from 400mm to 800mm. Standard design features include the highest quality close grain cast iron, giving dimensional stability and good vibration absorbance. Base mountings can be completed to suit any machining centre.
The philosophy behind the cube-type platform allows the loading of horizontal machining centre pallets with the maximum number of components to boost the productivity of both twin and multiple pallet machines.
Robert Johnson added: “Edwards Vacuum chose Craftsman Tools because of the stability and accuracy of our cube-based workholding. This falls into two categories: the popular plain faced type, and a version with interchangeable plates.
“With so many years experience in the design and manufacture of prismatic workholding systems, we have developed the highest level of expertise in this very important product.
“Our standard range is available on very short delivery, while at the same time we have proved that we can design and manufacture bespoke items to suit any industry sector.”
The typical plain faced type cube mounts directly to a standard machine pallet and the individual cube is supplied finished machined, so its faces are ready to take fixturing items, perpendicular to the integral base and edge locations, while parallelism is also assured.
They can also be used to apply the “Crafticube” system, which gives incredible flexibility in the application of fixtures. Precise dowels on each face guarantee permanent datums and interchangeability of fixture plates.
Other members of the cube family include hollow tee brackets, cruciforms, and angle brackets. All of these can also accept fixture plates by applying the same principles, and are ideal for the mounting of a series of vice units and other modular arrangements.
