Arthur Sanders – a new name in contract honing

A joint venture between Delapena Honing Equipment’s contracting division and Apperley Honing has created a new contract honing business – Arthur Sanders (Cheltenham) Ltd. The venture will benefit from experience gained in Delapena’s 80 years as a leading manufacturer of honing equipment and Apperley’s 45 years as a contract honing specialist.

Remploy wins electronics manufacturing award

Remploy Electronics has been recognised in the Yorkshire Productivity Awards 2008, winning the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) category. Remploy’s Bolton manufacturing site was nominated based on the number of its staff achieving level 2 NVQs in Electronics and won the category against competition from 20 other finalists from across the north of England.

MAS North East and Productivity Alliance merged

Regional development agency One NorthEast has signed a £30 million deal for PA Consulting Group to deliver its combined Manufacturing Advisory Service and North East Productivity Allicance (PA) until March 2013. One NorthEast brought the services together to simplify, streamline and improve manufacturing support across the region.

Farnborough International is £44billion success

New orders worth approximately £44.35bn for some 480 aircraft and equipment systems were announced during the 60th anniversary Farnborough Airshow 2008, which ended on 20 July. This doubled the 2006 record. The event attracted 132,636 business visitors and 153,000 public visitors on the final weekend.

Aerospace supply chain event takes off in Frankfurt

Airtec 2008, the International Aerospace Supply Fair, will take place from November 11 to 14 at the Exhibition Centre Frankfurt Main, Germany. Exhibitors include suppliers of tools, components and engineering services from all sections of the industry. This year’s event includes a number of special features including a ‘guest’ country, a focus on composites and an international conference.

Sheffield Forgemasters chief executive Dr Graham Honeyman has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. He joins 43 other pioneering industry and academic figures on this year’s list of Fellows, including Queen Mary 2 designer Stephen Payne and leader of the UK Energy Research Centre John Loughhead.

Machining complex, hardened steel bodies for aero engine probes can be a tricky business says Bob Duffin of Hi-Tech Aerospace components. “Sometimes we might only be producing a £250 feature on a component worth £3,000. However, the feature in question might specify tolerances as tight as 0.005mm, which puts a lot of pressure on the operator and the performance of the machine.”

Subcon boosts enquiries for Arterial

Linear drives cut auto cycle time

Small precision component specialist Tenable Screw Co has recently installed four Citizen R07 Type VI CNC sliding head autos with linear drive technology. This is allowing the fast machining of small components from bar stock and complements existing coil fed machines – particularly when the coil stock is no longer readily available. On one automotive component the cycle time was cut by 14 seconds.

Gardner halves Ti machining times

Gardner Aerospace Wales has cut scrap to below 1 percent and hand finishing by 85 percent on titanium machining contracts for aerospace primes. This has cut machining times in half – a vital consideration as 80 percent of production now involves prismatic machining of Ti64 (6% aluminium / 4% vanadium) titanium alloy. Just three years ago 80 percent of production was straightforward aluminium.

Rapid manufacturing and prototyping specialist, Ogle Models, has introduced a flame retardant plastic to the range of materials that it uses to produce components for customers. Designated PA 2210 FR, the powder is produced by EOS for use in its laser-sintering machines, of which Ogle operates three, two of which were bought in June 2008 as part of a £1 million investment.
