  • Over-moulding adds protection for small and large volumes

Engineering Solution now offers a bespoke low pressure over-moulding service using hot melt polyamide compounds. This can include strain relief features as well as bushes, boots or grommets, together with full encapsulation for mechanical, electrical, chemical and water resistance.

  • A question of balance

Balancing and diagnostics specialist Schenck has expanded its network of regional contract balancing services by accrediting Luton-based AEM. The Schenck Balancing Centre at AEM  offers the expertise and skills for balancing for all types and sizes of rotor up to 50kg mass, 1200mm length and 600mm diameter on a Pasio 50 balancing machine.

Industry News

  • Fastener prices could be 60% higher within months

Fastener industry expert Phil Matten says he can see costs across the range of standard steel fasteners being 40% to 60% higher than 2007 levels within a matter of months. The main contributors are steeply increasing steel prices, driven by extraordinary increases in raw material costs across the world – including a 65% increase in the cost of iron ore and a 200% increase in the cost of coke.

  • Shrinking the skills gap

With the UK’s engineering industry currently suffering from a critical skills shortage, resource solutions are at the forefront of people’s minds. Max Strover, a specialist recruiter at Omega Engineering Services, looks at how more young people could be attracted to the profession.

  • Lamborghini selects new Diamond Black Zircotec coating for Reventón

Automotive coating specialist Zircotec has been selected by Automobili Lamborghini to supply a new thermal barrier for its one million Euro Reventón car. Zircotec’s plasma-sprayed Diamond Black coating is applied to the exhaust and inhibits heat transfer from the tailpipe protecting heat sensitive components from damage.

  • Acro shapes its future with 3D machining capability

Since East Anglian precision engineering company Acro decided to venture into  milling work after 30 years of focusing on turned components it has won new clients and its new vertical machining centre has been busy from day one.

  • Digital prototyping – is it for me?

3D digital prototyping software can revolutionise a manufacturing operation – small business must wake up and smell the profits, says Mark Mills of Micro Concepts. You never forget the first time you see the magic of 3D digital prototyping in action, he says, you feel like a short-sighted person putting on glasses for the first time.

  • Ceramic coating lets composites work above melting point

A new ceramic thermal barrier technology from Zircotec will allow high strength, lightweight materials to be used in high temperature environments for which they have previously been unsuitable. Believed to be the only product of its type available commercially, the process is so effective it allows composites to function in temperatures above their melting point.

  • CAM wranglers will get to grips with productivity

A new contract production engineering services business, See NC Ltd, aims to help companies optimise their use of CAM software, post-processors and machine tools.

  • Take a quantum leap in computerised design

For over twenty years, the engineering world has been dominated by Computer Aided Engineering - CAD/CAE. It is now predicted that KBE, and supporting technologies such as ‘solid modelling’ and ‘analytical prototyping’, will become the prime means of industrial product design and development by 2010.

  • Practical guide for UK manufacturers

Close Asset Finance and the Engineering and Machinery Alliance (EAMA) have teamed up to produce a guide of tips and checklists for UK manufacturers. The EAMA Handbook covers subjects stretching from money and employment matters to exporting, skills development and grants.

  • Why buy a dog and bark yourself?

“I cannot see the point of investing in accurate and repeatable CNC machine tools and then checking the components they produce by hand,” says Nick Groom of Qualiturn.  “You simply take the risk of human error out of the machining process only to reintroduce it in the quality control department.”
