Intelligent lighting boosts productivity

Waldmann Lighting says that the right lighting can increase a company’s productivity by up to 40%, and cut defect rates by 50%. The key is to take a careful look at the lighting requirements for specific tasks rather than simply using a standard lighting system across the workplace.

The conventional approach to workplace lighting has been to tailor the amount of light provided to the size of the area to be illuminated, rather than the actual tasks being carried out in that space. The result is usually a lighting scheme that gives a high and uniform level of general illumination, but does not give enough light where it is needed on the job.

This means that energy bills are larger than they need to be, and yet productivity, quality and safety performance requirements are not met. Waldmann’s approach, which it calls Twin-C, brings together intelligent lighting concepts with tailored lighting components. It starts by addressing the specific demands of each part of  the workplace and bringing together these requirements with optimum lighting products.

Typical areas where this approach can be applied include assembly plants, production lines, quality control and inspection stations, packaging and order picking areas, painting workstations, aisles where materials and products are transported, and individual machine cells.

To help companies achieve the benefits of Twin-C, Waldmann Lighting will carry out a lighting survey of the customer’s facility and analyse this to identify potential improvements in productivity, quality, safety and energy consumption. It will then develop a bespoke lighting concept, and match this with the lighting components – task lights, general lighting, machine lights, universal adjustable lights and so on – that will create the right lighting in the right place. The result is lighting adjusted to the person and the task, specific lighting concepts for different tasks and work zones, and a safer, more productive workplace.

Waldmann Lighting has produced a booklet on the Twin-C approach that includes research findings that illustrate the productivity, safety, health and energy saving benefits that can be achieved by applying intelligent lighting concepts. It also includes extensive data on the correct light requirements for a wide range of industrial tasks. Copies of the booklet can be obtained by contacting Waldmann Lighting on 01132 775 662 or by emailing enquiries@waldmannlighting.co.uk .
