CMM investment for Turbocam
01 May 2008
Fareham-based Turbocam, one of the world’s largest five-axis machining specialists, with 75 five-axis machines at its facilities in the UK, USA and India is upgrading its UK inspection facilities with two new Wenzel CMMs.
The complexities of the typical components produced by Turbocam impose specific demands on the quality control department, and following a review of its inspection facilities it decided it was time to invest in new measuring capacity that was capable of measuring a ‘typical’ Turbocam component, namely integrally bladed components for the turbomachinery, aerospace and automotive industries.
Of almost equal importance was the CMM’s user-friendliness and simplicity of programming as it will be used by machine operators rather than dedicated inspection staff to measure high-volume components.
“After looking at numerous suppliers, and even considering the upgrade of the existing CMM, the decision was taken to purchase a Wenzel Smart 5 CMM P1and a Wenzel LH87 with 1000 mm Y axis,” says Chris Widdop – Quality Manager Turbocam Europe Ltd. “Wenzel was successful due in part to its use of OpenDMIS measuring software, which allowed for compatibility with our existing in-house manufacturing software, which gave us the confidence that the new CMMs could be integrated into our system without any issues, using part programs from our existing database.”
