Merc’s managing director Les Nuttall says that the economic downturn has not slowed the company's investments, as he believes that, combined with a skilled workforce, they will allow it move towards its target of being a world class manufacturer and face up to tougher competition from Eastern Europe and South East Asia.

Investments have not just been in new machinery. To speed up Merc’s expansion in the aerospace sector it recently spent £1.2 million acquiring near neighbour Bright Spark Engineering.

Bright Spark is approved to the AS 9100 Aerospace standard, and has experience of a wide range of aerospace components for civil and defence industry customers. Merc, which is currently seeking AS 9100 approval specialises in the military aerospace market, having been involved in the prototyping and development of projects such as the ASRAAM missile and the 1000lb Bomb for Royal Ordnance.
