Press tool maker invests £750,000 to lead in accuracy

A Redditch company, Harper and Simmons, has established itself as the only press tool subcontractor in the United Kingdom with a £750,000 Shin Nippon Koki (SNK) tool and die multi-centre. The company says that this will allow it to offer the most accurate and efficient machine milling, drilling and boring available in the industry.
This is down to the machines ultra-accurate measuring feed-back system, large pallet changer, travelling bridge and full five-face machining ability. Hugh efficiency gains will come from the pallet changer enabling continuous machine utilisation. The Japanese company is considered one of the premier manufacturers of tool and die centres in the world.
At a time when most of the UK tool making industry has contracted, Harper and Simmons are investing heavily for the future. We have to remain competitive in a highly specialised and global industry, being attractive through high investments, explains Managing Director Robert Simmons who says that the SNK is the largest single machine investment ever for the 65-year-old company.
This is a really special machine that will service virtually every sector of the industry, says Robert. It allows us to handle much larger and more complex jobs from start to finish all under one roof. Its the only machine of its type available in a tool room in the UK and is already generating huge interest from industries as diverse as automotive tool making to petrochemical and nuclear.
Harper and Simmons says it already provides one of the most extensive large-capacity wire eroding facilities and state-of-the-art water jetting facilities in the world.
