  • New Indian operations complement UK

    Danatrol has invested in new manufacturing facilities and equipment to expand its Indian operation and create a new company, Danatrol Engineering PVT LTD (India). The new plant houses CNC turning and vertical machining centres as well as full second operation facilities and latest inspection equipment. 

  • Matco invests as machining business takes off

    Birmingham-based Matco Engineering has invested £60,000 in a Mitsubishi M-H5B twin pallet horizontal machining centre which has helped it to secure a growth in business of more than 30 per cent from its largest customer.  

  • Speeding tool regrinds for aero industry

    Techni-Grind (Preston), a sub-contract supplier of precision tool regrinding services to the aerospace industry, has installed a fourth Walter high specification CNC tool and cutter grinder and a new Helicheck tool measuring machine to speed regrind and inspection times.      

Heat Treatment

  • New hydrogen furnace lets Kepston process larger parts

    Kepston has invested over £300,000 in a new dry hydrogen continuous furnace at its Wednesbury heat treatment plant that has increased the size of component it can process up to 450mm wide by 200mm high. For rigid components the maximum realistic length is around 1.5 m, and it can process flexible materials up to any length.  

  • Further investment at THT

    Tamworth Heat Treatment Ltd (THT) has recently acquired two new furnaces. The most recent is a dual-based plasma nitriding furnace from Rubig of Austria. The environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient unit uses three-zone heating of the work chamber, controlled via the Windows-based process control system.

  • EIA meeting explains Train to Gain benefits

    The Engineering Industries Association, Southern Region, is inviting members and other like-minded SMEs to an informal meeting on the help available from the Train to Gain initiative. The meeting will be held on Wednesday 15th October in Harrow. 

  • Beaming in on exotic materials

    Specialist subcontractor Cambridge Electron Beam has installed a further Sodick EDM machine. This will be used to erode complex forms and difficult-to-machine shapes in exotic materials such as molybdenum and tungsten. 

  • A sideways look at loading cuts lead times

    Dudley Tubes has leased a fleet of five Baumann Sideloaders to move steel in its high-rack warehouse. This has allowed it to stop using labour-intensive overhead cranes, doubling operator productivity cutting lead times. 

  • Scores go up in under a month

    Richard Alan Engineering has completed the complex support steelwork for a new scoreboard in just four weeks. The new high-definition display will keep track or tries and goals at the Galpharm Stadium, joint home of Huddersfield's football and rugby league teams. 

  • Quality accreditation for titanium supplies

    Specialist tube and strip supplier Titanium Products Ltd has gained certification to BS EN ISO 9001 as a manufacturer of welded titanium tube and a supplier of seamless titanium tube and strip. 

  • Designs for growth at AMTRI Cobble

    Specialist machinery builder AMTRI Cobble has appointed three new mechanical design engineers to strengthen its project teams as the business continues to expand. It has also appointed general manager Ian Laven as a director. The company was launched in January this year and is backed by capital equipment manufacturer Cobble. 

  • EDM technology cuts cycle times and costs at CA Tooling

    A new linear-drive CNC spark erosion machine is halving EDM cycle times at injection mould tool specialist CA Tooling. The machine's automatic toolchanger is also helping it stay cost-competitive with overseas competition by allowing it to run unmanned overnight and at weekends. 

  • High bar count encoders are light work for Tecan

    Metal encoder disks for a wide array of high-accuracy motion control, positioning and measurement applications are available from custom-part manufacturer, Tecan. All standard slot counts as well as completely bespoke requirements can be produced by using Photo Electro Forming (PEF) or Photo-Chemical Machining (PCM) processes that give superior accuracy and high bar counts. 

  • Government presses all the buttons for nuclear power

    Business secretary John Hutton will today announce that he is determined to press all the buttons to get nuclear power stations built at the earliest possible opportunity.  The Government believes that the electricity from new nuclear generators is absolutely indispensable for keeping the UK's lights on, reducing its dependency on foreign oil and gas, and cutting carbon emissions.  

  • Gordon Murray Design invests in direct digital manufacturing

      Gordon Murray Design has purchased a Stratasys direct digital manufacturing and prototyping system. The automotive design firm will use the machine to build multiple components for automotive design and tooling, for example interior instrument parts, trim panels and fittings, exterior components, wind tunnel model parts and parts for running test vehicles.  

  • Largest castings ever made in Europe – again

    Sheffield Forgemasters is to repeat engineering history by creating two 340 tonne castings which will be used in some of the world’s largest mechanical forging presses.

    MTA welcomes manufacturing strategy   The Manufacturing Technology Association has give a positive response to the  Government’s Manufacturing Strategy Review as a positive statement on the value to the economy of manufacturing and the recognition of the need for a vibrant manufacturing sector to maintain the UK’s position in the global economy.

    Precision stampings specialist Batten & Allen has invested in seven Bruderer high-speed presses since the year 2000, bringing the total on its Cirencester site to twenty-six. All of these latest machines have long beds that allow the use of complex progression tools with multiple stages.

    Clamason Industries has made a speciality of producing high-tech enclosures and RFI/EMI shielding cans for consumer electronics products such as digital set-top boxes. 

  • Brandauer gets wired for multiple setups

    New investment in twin- wire EDM technology is helping precision pressing and EMC shielding specialist Brandauer to machine large tools and multiple jobs in a single set-up. It has increased the company’s capability and capacity, allowing it to take on more complex tool manufacture and improve lead times on press parts.

  • CNES exports 3,000 tonne test rig to China

    Corus Northern Engineering Services (CNES) has manufactured a 3,000 tonne hydraulic test rig for Oil State Services. The rig will be delivered to the Chinese Tianjin Pipe Corporation (TPCO) for testing seamless steel pipe.
