Brandauer gets wired for multiple setups
11 Sep 2008
New investment in twin- wire EDM technology is helping precision pressing and EMC shielding specialist Brandauer to machine large tools and multiple jobs in a single set-up. It has increased the company’s capability and capacity, allowing it to take on more complex tool manufacture and improve lead times on press parts.
The machine, an Agie Charmilles FI 6050 TW, is being used to machine complex progression tools which are used by Brandauer to manufacture high-volume, high-precision pressings for industries and market sectors that include medical devices, technical plumbing, electrical equipment, electronics and telecommunications. The machine’s Twin Wire technology make the machine fast and flexible, while its digital generator ensures the process reliability that is vital for unattended and lights-out operations.
To remain competitive and to grow its business Brandauer has invested heavily in new plant and equipment. And, as well as investing in new technology Brandauer has channelled significant resources into improving its manufacturing processes and systems, and developing the skills of its people. These continuous improvement strategies and lean manufacturing principles have been applied throughout the company and are delivering real business benefits.
As managing director David Spears explains: “Wherever possible and feasible we work with customers from concept to completion. We work hand-in-hand with our customers’ in-house production teams advising them from the outset on different materials, component design, production techniques and treatments; testing etc. We are also on hand to advise and respond with the optimum solutions to issues concerning stockholding, packaging and delivery.”
Brandauer has recently, via a joint venture with a company in Austria, developed a completely new process for incorporating in-cycle welded contacts during the manufacture of metal pressings, eliminating costly secondary finishing operations. The first of these CNC machines is due for installation at Brandauer’s facility later in the year.
