Golden days for DavyMarkham

Critical components from Sheffield engineering company DavyMarkham have arrived at a Canadian gold mine as part of a £10 million contract.
Engineering specialist DavyMarkham, which designs and supplies large hoisting systems, won the lucrative contract to supply base metals mining company, Hudbay Minerals Inc, with three hoists for Lalor Mine Project.
This is the second major Canadian project DavyMarkham has secured this year – in July the company won a £10m contract to supply drum hoists to gold producer, Goldcorp Eléonore Project, in Québec.
Production began on the hoists in March at DavyMarkham’s Darnall base and now, after a four-week journey, they have arrived in Manitoba, Canada, a region which is a significant producer of gold.
Steve Henson, DavyMarkham’s Lalor project manager, said: “The contract for Hudbay Minerals was to supply three hoists for use in their copper, gold and zinc mine - Lalor Mine Project.
“Four weeks ago the three hoists, which consist of a 16 feet double drum production hoist and clutch, a 14 feet double drum service hoist and clutch and an eight feet auxiliary hoist, left Sheffield by sea to Montreal.
“They then travelled by train to Winnipeg, and then by truck to the mine which is in the small town of Snow Lake.”
DavyMarkham not only won the £8m contract to design and manufacture the hoists but was also awarded the £2m installation contract.
Gordon Scott, sales and marketing director at DavyMarkham, said: “We were delighted to win the initial contract to manufacture the hoists, which are now safely on site. It is another great milestone for the team at DavyMarkham.
“This has helped us to build upon our growing reputation within the mining market and we have now been awarded the contract to continue working with Hudbay Minerals to help with both mechanical and electrical installation and commissioning of the hoists.
“In a few weeks time we will be arranging for a team of five engineers from Sheffield to travel to Canada to assist with the hoist installations until February next year.”
