Luton subcontractor UPE (Ultra Precision Engineering Ltd) has recently installed four new Doosan machine tools – a two Puma lathes and two DNM milling machines.

They are being used to machine components for the aerospace, defence, medical, electronics and leisure sectors, as well as to  manufacture high-performance, high-specification fishing tackle equipment for UPE’s own JAG brand.

Says operations director Steve Wickens: “‘We operate 24/7 and work to stringent quality requirements and delivery timescales. As a consequence we expect a lot from our machine tools and, from experience, believe that Doosan machines backed by Mills CNC’s after-sales support represent great value and are hard to beat.’

Since the company was first established in 2001 it has invested in 10 new Doosan machines and the latest arrivals have provided the company with much needed additional machining capacity.

Starting with 8 employees in 2001 UPE now employs 27 staff and, to help address the problem of finding (and retaining) skilled, qualified engineers has recently developed its own in-house apprentice programme. The two apprentices currently on the programme will learn all aspects of UPE’s manufacturing business – machine operation, setting, programming, inspection etc.

The company is registered to AS9100 and in addition to providing a range of machining services also offers a number of other secondary services to customers which include shot blasting, ultrasonic cleaning, heat treatment, plating, testing and assembly.
