South Shields based Ford Aerospace, a division of the long established Ford Component Manufacturing, scored a notable achievement recently when it was selected as the first ever Westland Transmissions subcontractor to be awarded strategic supplier status.

Ford is the first supplier to be given the accolade following a detailed selection process that involved mutual visits, strategic presentations, detailed questionnaires and searching examinations. The company's managers believe their vast range of products and processes, together with a "can do" mentality and practice of Lean Manufacturing principles, gave them an edge; one they intend to optimize in the coming years.

Martin Burke, Westland Transmissions' Head of Procurement said: "Ford fitted the profile of the ideal supplier for today and the future. They have the capacity, the manufacturing capability, the financial stability and general like minds that we are looking for. Ford matched the profile we had developed and based on that they were identified as ideal supplier."
