Reed reports job opps up by 17%
Engineering continues to help prop up the UK job market according to Reed
The last Reed Job Index figures of 2011 revealed that job opportunities were 17% higher in December compared with the same month in 2010 and by more than a fifth compared with two years ago.
Reed say that at the year end, the job index stood at a total of 121, and this demonstrates that the demand for new staff showed sustained growth in 2011.
Engineers, IT and telecommunications have been at the forefront of the growth with an increase in job vacancies of over 40%.
Indeed, the engineering sector finished 2011 with a score of 170 – up by 70 points from December 2009, when the Index began.
Martin Warnes, Managing Director of reed.co.uk, commented: “Skilled technical staff in traditional areas of heavy industry, like engineering, have been especially sought after, alongside IT, telecommunications, leisure and tourism staff.
He added: “Certainly employers have become more cautious as 2011 draws to a close, and it is impossible to predict the impact of any new economic challenges that lie ahead. However, right now, UK employers are not only investing in new talent to fill their immediate needs, they are clearly planning for growth in 2012.”
