For the second year running, British offshore renewable energy specialist, Mojo Maritime, has won the Tidal Energy Engineering Company of the Year award at the annual International Tide Energy Summit.

This is in recognition of the company’s work towards helping make tidal energy more commercially viable.

In addition to this, a consortium of companies including Mojo Maritime, Bauer Renewables, Voith Hydro and the University of Exeter were awarded the Most Effective Tidal Energy Project Development of the Year at the summit.

The project involved the installation of a monopole at EMEC for Voith Hydro using a new and innovative sub sea drill.

Mojo supported Bauer Renewables in developing the BSD 3000, providing marine operations, subsea operations and hydrodynamic analysis input to the design. The company also managed the offshore operations.

Prior to this, it was not possible to drill large diameter monopiles without using topside drilling methods which generally require a jack up barge. The BSD 3000 is operated from a Dynamic Positioned DP Vessel.

Richard Parkinson, managing director of Mojo Maritime, said to Engineering Capacity: “The advantage of this drill is it's lowered to the seabed and drills to seabed level. The BSD 3000 is much safer in terms of operation as it can be operated from a DP vessel and is positioned using ROV’s, negating the need for divers and increasing safety even further.”

Mojo have a busy year planned in the tidal energy sector – it is currently working with several of the leading tidal energy developers notably TGL, Rolls Royce, Atlantis, Marine Current Turbines and Voith.
