Nanotechnology focus in healthcare
NanoKTN want to bring the ICT and healthcare sectors closer together
NanoKTN, the knowledge based network for micro and nanotechnologies, want to bring the miniaturisation of ICT technology to the healthcare market.
NanoKTN's recent event called ‘Miniaturisation in healthcare products’ was aimed at building partnerships and increasing the strength of the supply chain - with a focus on making the commercialisation of new products easier.
It focused on the importance of the ICT industry to healthcare in the non-stop quest to produce more robust, integrated devices that require less power and are less invasive for patients.
As Dr Mike Fisher, theme manager at the NanoKTN said: “The manufacturers of chips and silicon nanotechnology don’t know the health industry as a market and vice versa, this event was about bringing people together and creating new market opportunities”.
For smaller manufacturing companies, there is an understandable risk in dipping a toe into a new market such as healthcare - it’s expensive.
To this end, the event also highlighted that there is £9 million worth of funding available from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for innovative projects between UK industry and academia.
